Week 7

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-HYZv6HzAs

The Podcast I chose to listen to was a ted talk Titled, "The skill of self-confidence". To give a little back story, Dr. Ivan Joseph who is an award-winning coach, best-selling author, and keynote speaker, explains the complexities of forming the skill of self-confidence.

This is a photo of him

The first main point Dr. Ivan makes is that the key to "self-confidence is repetition, repetition, reptation" (2:06). This reminds me of the first couple of weeks learning about self-perception and online communication because to actively perform well and to come across as professional as possible, there is a lot of rehearsal and care that goes into the task to make it the best possible.

Communication across different platforms will require different preparation strategies. But learning your style of preparing is great practice.  Dr. Ivan connects self-perception to the unrealistic expectations we set on ourselves, like to be confident in yourself. Dr Ivan states "we can't be self-confident unless the skill or task you are doing is not new to us" ( 2:51). By this I think he is suggesting that you can't be confident at something you haven't done before.

A large part about being confident in yourself comes from places of self affirmation. Dr. Ivan argues that in very small parts of your day like brushing your teeth you should reaffirm yourself that you are in control of your life, and that you are the master of your own fate. He suggests writing a list about what makes you, you, and to read it to yourself as a sense of security and knowing yourself.

Week 6

How has social media played a role in the 2020 civil rights movement and protests?

Social media started to become an outlet for everyone's feelings, opinions, thoughts, and beliefs. When I was living in Seattle, I noticed specifically on Instagram people were getting borderline harassed for not posting a black square to show allyship, then it switched and people that did post a black square received some sort of backlash. It wasn't just the black square post's I noticed in Seattle, it seemed like people were just posting things to make them look oppressed or look like their fighting for something. I would say social media influenced a lot of performance activism in Seattle, especially people around my age range. With the barrier of a screen people could share whatever they wanted.

How is social media changing the way people document history?

The way people document history is always going to be more helpful to the people most similar to who's writing it. That being said social media allows for the extension of perspectives, stories, and significant moments. What I mean by this is that people have a lot more access globally to technology now than ever before. We can take someone's personally experiences as history, so someone's Instagram account could be seen as a glorified history of that person's life. Not everyone glorifies themselves on social media, and not everyone posts at all. The idea that we can permanently post something to the internet allows us to mark our identity into the history of this technological age.

How has social media become a powerful mobilization channel?

Social media is essentially broadcasting our history on the internet, and we call it news stations. I think the idea of what is and isn't history is different from person to person. The world has changed more in the past 400 years then in the past 4 million. I feel like this due to the number of things that get posted online. The number of different opinions, right or wrong, scientifically backed or not, there is so many. I think the act of reading world events just off our phones or computers desensitizes us. Personally, I feel like I have less of a reaction when I hear something crazy happening in the world. I sympathize for the people affected by these issues; however, the human world has been having a lot of issues. Having technology allows the exposure of so many things at once, we disassociate how catastrophic and impactful they can be.

Week 5 discussion

 Luckydog

Lucky Dog clothing in Seattle is a used cloths retailing business with only two locations. These locations are both in North Seattle. They have been around sense late 2017 and have been picking up hype sense then. The people who are in charge of the social media platforms often post daily and of celebrities that come to their shop. Not only do they use celebrities to real in people, but they also have a living mascot who is sitting next to Macklemore in the picture above. I would be lying if I said I hadn't gone all the way down to the shops to just see the dog. The people at Lucky Dog have done and awesome job at creating a friendly home environment to shop in and are doing a great job reflecting the stores atmosphere online over Instagram. They have two Instagram accounts for each shop individually where you can see the daily deals they have, or what shoes/cloths are on sale.

The website can be found at Lucky Dog Clothing and the first thing you see when looking at their website is the illustration of the dog. Across the page are the Instagram handles where u can find what both store locations currently have in stock. In the middle of the page there is cycling photos of celebs who checked out lucky dog as well as information about the company and store locations. Then as you get to the bottom of the page, they list the instore gift card prices as well as the company's they buy and trade. I think this is a very nice set up and can be very affective! The use of celebrity endorsements right above the price of gift cards could be a useful strategy to get people to buy the cards, however I am not sure how many people actually buy those cards. Their website does a great job of listing each locations hours, how to get there, and how buying and selling works at each location. I don't think they have anything else to improve on except for editing the style or format of the website.

I personally have spent way too much money here and have no intentions on stopping.

From what I could understand the 2 categories are Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants. If I had to pick one which I belong to it would be digital natives. Honestly learning has kind been bad for me throughout me entire school experience. Almost every teacher struggled with technology, and I don't think it's getting any easier to comprehend. I have also struggled with wanting to use computers in class and even learning how to type. Personally, i never really clicked with technology like a native tech kid should but I guess. I have time to learn.

  • What are some of the other myths Kirschner associated with Prensky’s findings from 2001.

He associated Multitasking and digital natives to the word myths. The reason behind this is one including words beyond my comprehension, so I looked them up and this is what I learned.

Presumed Capabilities: Something that basis of probablitly.
